Study coordinator
Börje Johansson is responsible for the administration
of our undergraduate courses (Göteborg University and Chalmers
University of Technology). This includes updating of syllabuses,
course catalogues, programme catalogue (Göteborg University)
and taking part in scheduling (Chalmers). He is also contact person
for students planning to do their master's theses.
Undergraduate
education
The division provides undergraduate courses for both Göteborg
University and Chalmers University of Technology.
A teaching year is divided into two terms, the Autumn term (Hösttermin,
running from late August until Christmas) and the Spring term (Vårtermin,
running from mid-January to early June). Each term is itself divided
into two periods (läsperioder, lp1 and lp2 in the Autumn
term, and lp3 and lp4 in the Spring term) of eight weeks each. A
period usually comprises seven weeks of lectures and tutorials and
one week of exams.
There is a two and a half week break for Christmas and New Year,
and a two week break around Easter time. Most courses take place
within a period, although some courses last for a whole term, or
even a whole year. Many of our courses are taken by both Chalmers
and Göteborg University students, studying a wide range of
degrees from Physics to Electrical Engineering, and our own Computer
Science degree. Chalmers students take three courses per period,
whereas Göteborg University students generally take only two.
Upon successful completion of a course, students are awarded course
points. Chalmers students generally receive 3.3 points per course,
while Göteborg University students usually receive 5 points
per course. One course point is intended to correspond to one week's
study. GU students have additional course requirements which are
intended to account for the difference in points. In many cases
the Chalmers passing score on course exams is 24 out of 60, whereas
the Göteborg University passing score is 28 out of 60 (by convention,
most exams here have a maximum score of 60). To pass an undergraduate
degree, apart from amassing enough course points, a student is also
required to undertake a significant project known as examensarbete
(literally "degree work"). Often these projects have an
industrial aspect, and many of our exjobbare (students doing
their degree project) undertake their project at Ericsson, Volvo,
Saab, and other Swedish companies that have an interest in computer
science graduates.
